What is the cycle to work scheme?
The Cycle to Work scheme is an initiative backed by the UK Government that aims to promote cycling as a means of commuting to work, not only to improve the health of the UK workforce but also to increase the use of more environmentally friendly transportation options.
The scheme encourages employers to register with a Cycle to Work Scheme provider so that they can provide discounted bicycles and accessories to their employees as a benefit through a salary sacrifice arrangement.
How does the cycle to work scheme work?
To allow employees to benefit from the Cycle to Work Scheme, the employer must first register with a Cycle to Work Scheme provider. There are multiple providers across the UK to choose from and most bike stores will work with most.
Once the employer is registered, they can begin offering the scheme as a benefit to their employees. If an employee chooses to utilise the benefit, they will purchase a bike using a voucher given to them by their employer. They would then repay their employer a certain amount each month out of their pre-tax salary until the cost of the bike was covered.

Most cycle to work schemes work by issuing a voucher for a certain amount and then the employee will visit a store to choose a bike. However, we recommend a different approach to ensure that your voucher will cover the cost of your bike and you’re not left with additional money to pay.
